Sgt Sylvia Applebaum Levy

USMC 1943 -46

Sylvia2

By Barbara Steever

My mother was from Philadelphia,  stationed in San Diego and then sent to Pearl Harbor where she was in the radio corps.  To my knowledge, she was among the first group of women Marines to arrive there.

The  photo below was actually a publicity shot taken when she arrived in Hawaii. She is the second woman on the left in the picture.

The picture of the three women saluting, shows my mother in the middle, her sister on the left (she was a WAVE), and her aunt (also a WAVE?) on the right.

Being a Marine for the “duration” was something she was proud of her entire life. She made it clear to her children that she wanted her service engraved on her bronze cemetery marker and have a flag draped casket.

This is just a bit of her history. She will never be forgotten.

Sylvia enlisted in the Marine Corps on 3 March 1943 and was sent to Hunter College 20 April 1943

I enlisted in Manchester, NH Feb 20, my 2oth birthday and went to Hunter college same time as Sylvia. Wish I could remember her. Went first to New Orleans, enlistment and recruiting. Worked long hours but loved then, and still proud to be a Marine. Barbara Currier Kruse

Thank you for commenting. Mom was a striking redhead who was also known by the nickname “Blossom”.

My uncle, James O’Leary signed up for the USMC in Manchester, NH. I believe it was either 1945 or ’46, and stayed in.

Mom’s greatest pride in her life was her service as a Marine. Her children knew to accept their position well back in the ranks, yet still be proud about that

Thank you. It’s always been a special sort of pride for her children that both our parents were Marines.
